Truck Insurance Quotes and HGV Insurance Quotes

HGV Insurance is a specialised type of commercial vehicle insurance. It covers vehicles exceeding a weight of 3.5 tonnes (up to 44 tonnes) that transport goods from one destination to another. You may have also heard it referred to as Truck Insurance or Haulage Insurance.

It’s specifically designed to cover the additional risks that come with transporting goods over long distances in a larger vehicle. We can find the right policy for drivers over 25 and offer a range of cover at competitive rates, from single-vehicle policies for individual drivers to policies for HGV fleets.

What types of vehicles are covered?

HGV Insurance is designed for vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes, which can include:

  • Articulated and rigid lorries
  • Flatbed trucks
  • Tipper trucks
  • Tanker trucks
  • Refrigerated lorries
  • Specialist recovery vehicles

Levels of HGV Insurance we offer:

Comprehensive covers most potential accident scenarios, including damage to your own vehicle(s). It’s the highest level of cover available and is generally recommended by insurance providers.

Third-Party, Fire and Theft covers everything included in TPO cover, and it also covers the cost of the vehicle should it be stolen or damaged by fire (minus any excess). However, it does not cover any accidental damage made to your own vehicle(s).

Third-Party Only is the lowest level of cover available. It covers damage caused to any third-party vehicle in the event of a fault accident, but it does not cover damage to your own vehicle(s).

How much does HGV Insurance cost?

HGV Insurance is typically more expensive when compared to policies for smaller vehicles. This is because there are more risks associated with operating heavier vehicles that transport goods over long distances.

The cost of Truck Insurance depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • The type of trucks/lorries that you operate
  • The types of goods that you transport and where they’re transported to/from
  • The experience and claims history of any drivers operating the vehicle(s)

How to get cheaper HGV Insurance

Depending on the insurance provider, there are certain steps you can take to reduce premiums, such as:

  • Using a broker who will compare quotes for you, saving you time and money
  • Opting for a Named Driver policy over an Any Driver policy
  • Employ experienced drivers with clean driving records if you operate a fleet

Goods in Transit cover for lorries and trucks

Goods In Transit Insurance provides cover for the damage or loss of goods when they’re being transported from one place to another.

Typically, insurers will not include Goods in Transit cover in their HGV Insurance policies. If you want to cover the goods that you transport with your truck, it’s worth considering purchasing Goods in Transit cover as a paid optional extra.

Hazardous goods can include:
• Chemicals, such as pesticides or disinfectants
• Fuel products
• Medical equipment
• Concrete
• Paint

Do you insure multiple vehicles?

Yes, we can insure multiple vehicles.

We work with insurers who can provide cover for one vehicle, offer multi-vehicle policies and those who will insure fleets on HGV Fleet Insurance basis.

Do you give No Claims Discount for HGV insurance?

We can take into account No Claims Discount from previous HGV policies to get you discounts from the insurers that we work with.

If you are claim-free through the HGV policy you take out with us, you will earn No Claims Discount at the renewal of your insurance.

Will my HGV Insurance policy include Public Liability insurance?

Public Liability insurance protects drivers in the event that their actions result in injury to a member of the public or damage to their property as a result of an accident that does not directly involve the insured vehicle.

Public Liability may be included in your HGV Insurance policy, but it will depend on the insurer. It can be an optional extra that you pay for, or it can be a separate standalone policy.

Should you have any further questions about Public Liability Insurance, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us today. Our team of experts can help you with any queries you have.

What HGV licence do I need to operate a truck/lorry?

To be able to legally drive a truck, you need to complete a driving qualification called the Driver Certfifcate of Professional Competence (CPC). All drivers on a HGV Insurance policy will need to hold this qualification in order for it to be valid.

On HGV Insurance policies, drivers may also be required to hold an appropriate operator’s licence to be able to drive the covered vehicles.

What's the difference between HGVs and LGVs?

An HGV (heavy goods vehicle) refers to lorries and trucks that have a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes.

An LGV (light goods vehicles) typically refers to vans that have a gross weight of 3.5 tonnes or less.

Sometimes insurers use the term LGV to mean ‘large goods vehicle’. This means the same as an HGV, which can sometimes cause confusion for those looking for the right type of insurance for their business.

What extra policies can I get?

Every insurance provider is different, and so are their policies. Sometimes what’s included as standard on one HGV Insurance policy will only be available as a paid extra on another.

Typically, most insurance providers will offer these policies, but they may need to be purchased at an extra cost alongside your core policy:

• Goods in transit cover – covers the damage or loss of goods when they’re being transported from one place to another.

• European cover – covers you if you or your drivers deliver goods to Europe.

• Breakdown assistance – protects you if your truck breaks down while driving.

• Employee liability cover – covers the cost of compensation if your employees are injured at work. This is a legal requirement if you employ staff.

• Public liability – can cover your legal costs in an event involving the member of the public.
